The Web’s Most Popular Search Engines

When it comes to finding things online, the best way is to obviously do a search for that item. A search engine is software that allows for the grouping of websites, images, and even videos that match the term you’re looking for. Say you’re looking for information on the latest hurricane or earthquake information. Typing these words – or strings – into the search engine will pull up news articles, blog posts, images, and even video interviews.

But the Internet is a big place and very much like a market, there’s a lot of competition on where a person should go for their search. Here are the three most popular search engines online.

Google – not only is Google the most popular search engine, the word in itself for most means to search for something. Often times you’ll hear people say, “Just Google it” or “I Googled the information” in relation to finding out information they need for reports, essays, or blogging. Currently, Google is the number one search engine in the world and with good reason. Many of their other services – such as Gmail, Calendar, Documents, Android phones, and now Google social network – is tied in together, making it easy to find what you’re looking for.

Bing – on the heels of Google is Microsoft’s offering to the search engine world. Bing is actually an updated version of their Live and MSN search which presented itself to Windows users when opening their Internet Explorer browsers. While Bing isn’t as big as Google, it’s been gaining, as people are finding content on it faster than Google. There was some controversy in that Bing was actually using Google searches to supply its own and rumor has it that Bing does actually stand for ‘because it’s not Google’.

Yahoo – once a major leader in search, Yahoo! has slipped in the polls, thanks in part to Google’s rise and its own buyout by Microsoft a few years ago. Like the two above it, Yahoo ties a lot of its services together which make it easier for users to find information.
